The Truck Pull never lies. It's not who is strongest,
it's who wants it more. For some they do it for the
crowd. Some do it for themselves. Some do it for
the T-Shirt.
With thousands of people in Campbellsport for the annual
parade it is a true community event that involves people from
all over the Midwest. Contestants vary in age, size, and
skill. The "Skinny Klub" entered in 2003 and featured
Dwayne "Dwaynie, Dwaynie" Hart weighing in at 131 lbs.
The boys at Loehr's meet market average well over 250 a
person. Some teams compete for the spirit stick others
compete for the world record.
The DJ and emcee are stationed on the truck and play hip-hop
songs, party songs, and July 4th and Strong Man themed songs
(think Beyonce, to Neil Diamond, to Gretchen Wilson, to the
theme from the Olympics)
The heat melts the contestants (one released his breakfast
right on the road) and the crowd (they drank twenty-two 1/2
barrels of beer in four hours in 2005.) The crowd is
diverse. You might see a family of five taking in the
sights, next to some guys that think they are on "Spring
Break", a bunch of teens just hanging out, to a retired
couple that just came to watch their grand daughter compete.
It's like a little Summerfest in a simpler, purer, more
exciting form.
It's reality TV without the non-sense.
Being a short event (it only takes about four hours), it is
intense. Bring your voice and prepare to get involved.
The crowd is just as much a part of the Truck Pull as the
contestants. They are only about 20 feet away. The
bleachers overflow and the people are about 20 deep. If
you really want a bleacher seat and don't care to mingle, get
there early.
The "Hard Core" Sponsors also get involved working the
beverage stand and passing out free stuff.
It can resemble an urban carnival at times. The "chin
guy" might be balancing a bowling ball, Scottie Bunkelman
might be doing the pyramid, and acts from around the State
might be stilt walking or breathing fire.
Just up the hill the Campbellsport Fire Department Picnic
rages on. Join the volunteer firemen as they celebrate
over 100 years of service to the community. Food, games
for the kids, and music in the main stage are all part of the
Truck Pull. See you there.
